Oakland Amtrak Maintenance Facility

Substructure Support Inc. has developed a safe, low-impact installation process through years of installing Torque Down Piles near sensitive structures and equipment. This made TDPs a logical choice for the Oakland Amtrak Maintenance Facility Project, located at 3rd Street and Union Street near the West Oakland BART Station. Piles designed to support two pre-fabricated canopy structures over portions of the trackway; our system allowed these piles to be safely installed while the rail yard remained active.

Project Conditions

Geotechnical reports indicated that subsurface conditions may contain buried obstructions such as old foundation and abandoned utility lines buried in layers of man-made fill, gravelly sand fill soils, compressible Bay Mud and stiff to very stiff clays. Groundwater was encountered between four and five feet below the surface during testing and liquefaction is considered likely in a seismic event.

Production Piles

Substructure Support Inc. installed eight Torque Down Piles measuring roughly forty feet in length each.
